Locations of Gas Plants and Other Coal-tar Sites in the U.S.

THE STATE OF OREGON

Introduction

Manufactured gals plants appeared and flourished in Oregon largely within the Willamette River Valley. Coal and railroads came together in the Valley. The State’s first MGP was at Portland, established in 1859. Today the author counts 18 FMGPs and related coal-tar sites in and about the City and a total of 59 for the State. Some of this modest stimulation came from the 1870s development of coal at Coos Bay. Natural gas of sufficient quantity to warrant service conversion to the widely-dispersed cities of the State was not delivered until 1956.
