Briget C. Doyle, Ph.D., E.I.T., G.R.I.T.*
► Dr. Hatheway has a new working arrangement with his own former doctoral candidate, Dr. Briget C. Doyle (EIT, GRIT*) who has taken up residence as Assistant Professor of Geology at The College of Charleston, Charleston, SC.
The cooperative work will be in response to the many inquiries that Dr. Hatheway receives with regard to the locations of gas works and various other coal-tar generators, as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Dr. Doyle is a specialist in the application of geology to all manner of societal problems and will devote her attention to developing State (and certain large cities) plots showing general locations of FMGPs and other coal-tar sites that have been discovered in the course of Dr. Hatheway's many years of research.
Additionally, Dr. Doyle plans on supplementing these findings with her own research and to locations and types. Together, they will prepare a series of dual GIS plots showing two phases of knowledge:
1) The basic knowledge gained by USEPA in its 1984-1985 draft and final reports of: 1985, Survey of Town Gas and By-Product Production and Location in the U.S. (1880-1950): Rept. EPA/600/7-85/004, by R. Eng., Radian Corp., Austin, TX, Feb, 468 p., PB85-173813 (See 1984 Draft, entitled Survey of Tar Waste Disposal and Locations of Town Gas Producers).
2) The total knowledge of what has been discovered by Dr. Hatheway and furthered by Dr. Doyle. For those who are interested in obtaining the original USEPA FMGP report, it may be purchased in hard copy or in microfiche from the National Technical Information Service, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Springfield, VA.
* EIT: Engineer in Training
GRIT: Geologist Registrant in Training
Both of these licenses are awarded only after passing stringent 8-hour examinations, and apply to graduates of accredited university engineering or geology curriculum, as applicable. After a specified period of training, the license holder is eligible to sit for another stringent eight-hour and to thereby qualified as a registered professional engineer or registered professional geologist. These licenses are controlled by individual States in the United States and by the Provinces in Canada."
