Allen W. Hatheway, Ph.D., P.E., P. Geologist

Allen W. Hatheway is a Geological Engineer with over forty years of professional experience. In Year 2000 he took early retirement from the School of Mines & Metallurgy of the University of Missouri-Rolla, in order to serve as the Year 2000 Richard H. Jahns Distinguished Lecturer on Excellence in Engineering Geology. In his role as Jahns Lecturer, of The Geological Society of America and the Association of Engineering Geologists, he delivered seventy lectures on his assigned topic of "Site Characterization." He also lectured extensively on the subject of former manufactured gas plants.

Allen came to Missouri in 1981, when he left a partnership in consulting engineering. His teaching was at the senior and graduate level and specialized in hazardous waste site and waste characterization and remedial engineering design. In addition, he taught the Geological Engineering departmental Senior Design Experience, as a requirement of the Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET), as well as courses in rock engineering, engineering seismology, weak rock engineering, and case histories as a technique of personal professional learning.

He presently provides sole-practice consulting on a worldwide basis specializing in site and waste characterization and remedial engineering of former manufactured gas plants and other coal-tar sites. Additionally, he works in the general field of hazardous waste cleanup, mitigation of natural hazards, geotechnical trouble-shooting and expert testimony in his fields of specialty.

He maintains a large professional technical library, estimated by a colleague to amount to 10,000 books and pamphlets, much of it related to manufactured gas and allied fields. He has devoted considerable energy over the past 13 years in learning and researching in manufactured gas and maintains huge computer files of bibliography, facts about manufactured gas, and a worldwide data base of nearly 8000 entries. His personal collection of color slides amounts to just over 24000 items, both from his own field work and as copies from the historic gas industry literature. In the course of his personal research, he has visited more than 200 sites of former manufactures gas plants.

Since 1986 he has published an "Annual Report on the International Status of Engineering Geology, Encompassing Hydrogeology, Environmental Geology and the Applied Geosciences," which appears in the journal "Engineering Geology" (Amsterdam).
